A five movement composition for 10-piece large ensemble. Incorporating elements of sound collage and primary source documents, the piece seeks to directly and formally address the intertwined histories of the formation of New Orleans jazz and anti-Jim Crow activism, setting them in a contemporary soundscape that draws resonance with today's musical and political landscape. Named after the infamous South Louisiana swamp rat, Nutria is an instrumental trio that performs original compositions with an emphasis on collective improvisation. Their music explores jazz, chamber music, and traditional music of the African diaspora and Eastern Europe, while staying true to New Orleans jazz and groove traditions.
